Attack on Titan is undoubtedly one of the best anime series of all time; however, several other Japanese anime are just as dark and violent as AOT, and they definitely deserve your attention.

Wit Studio premiered the Attack On Titan series back in 2013, and since then, Eren’s story has grabbed the attention of the entire anime community. Over the years, AOT anime has become a cultural phenomenon, thanks to its incredible story and fascinating yet complex characters.

Part 1 of AOT’S final season was released last year in January, and now, everyone eagerly awaits the anime to come back with Season 4 Part 2. Obviously, we have no choice but to wait until January 2022 to watch the rest of the episodes. 1. Black Bullet

Based on a Japanese light novel written by Shiden Kanzaki and illustrated by Saki Ukai, Black Bullet anime aired back in 2014. The anime features a world that is devastated after the Gastrea pandemic. The parasitic virus forces the rest of humanity to live within Varanium walls, called Monolith walls.

If that wasn’t bad enough, children infected with the Gastrea virus stars getting superhuman abilities. In short, the more you learn about Black Bullet, the more it seems similar to Attack on Titan.

2. Fullmetal Alchemist

Honestly, you can’t call yourself an anime fan if you aren’t aware of Fullmetal Alchemist. The anime/manga follows the journey of two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric. Ed and El try to revive their mother through Alchemy, but El loses his entire body in the process. So, Ed sacrifices his arm to build an armor that could contain Elric’s soul. And now, they spend their days searching for the Philosopher Stone that could help them get their bodies back.

Studio Bones released two anime adaptations of Fullmetal Alchemist. The first one was premiered in 2003, the time when the manga was still ongoing. So, it featured an ending entirely different from the manga. The second adaptation, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, came out in 2009, and it faithfully adapts the manga.

3. Tokyo Ghoul

In Attack on Titan, Eren hates Titans from the core of his heart, but things turn ugly for him when he becomes the same thing he swore to kill. However, he understands that this curse is also an opportunity for him to defeat the enemy.

Well, Tokyo Ghoul’s main protagonist, Ken Kaneki, goes through a similar situation. In a world overrun by Ghouls who survive on human flesh, Ken becomes half Ghoul after undergoing a surgery. Now, the boy must adjust to his new life while also keeping his identity hidden from humans close to him.

4. Claymore


Madhouse’s Claymore is one of those anime that doesn’t shy away from gore and violence, similar to Attack on Titan. The anime/manga features a fictional world exploited by humanoid shape-shifters, Yoma, who feasts on human flesh. To fight this terror, an organization creates hybrids that are half-human and half Yuma. Basically, humanity relies on self-created monsters to destroy actual monsters; sounds familiar?

5. God Eater

Ufotable’s God Eater is based on a video game of the same name. In a post-apocalyptic world, an organization comes forth to protect humanity against monsters by using powerful weapons called “God Arcs.”

God Eater came out in 2015 and featured 13 amazing episodes. Also, the anime comes from the animation studio that’s behind Demon Slayer, so it is surely worth checking out.
