Jorge Gutierrez, the visionary for The Book of Life, is set to release his newest adventure, Maya and the Three on Oct. 22, 2021, exclusively on Netflix!
Gutierrez is known throughout the animation industry as an advocate of content that represents the Mexican and Latinx communities. His beloved Nickelodeon TV series El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera (2007-2008) put Gutierrez on the map, giving him the power to create the award-winning film The Book of Life (2014).
Maya and the Three is a limited animated series with a star-studded cast, headed by Zoe Saldana as Maya. You’ll also hear the voices of Queen Latifah, Diego Luna, Rosie Perez, Stephanie Beatriz, Gabriel Iglesias, and Danny Trejo.
Mesoamerican mythology, exciting music, incredible graphics, and Gutierrez’s unmistakable designs make this an animated event you won’t want to miss.
Maya and the Three synopsis
The nine-part Netflix original miniseries follows Princess Maya, a Teca Eagle Warrior and the subject of an ancient prophecy. To defeat the dark god Lord Mictlan, Maya must find the other warriors destined to greatness.
Maya and the warriors from the great prophecy don’t exactly have a plan. But if they don’t succeed, Maya will be sacrificed and Lord Mictlan will gain the power to take over the world.
Here’s how Netflix describes Maya and the Three:
A spirited princess with the heart of a warrior embarks on a mission to fulfill an ancient prophecy and save humanity from the wrath of vengeful gods.
Thanks to Gutierrez, Netflix now has an entire series dedicated to the representation of Mexican folklore, which hasn’t been explored otherwise in animation besides a few cherry-picked titles.
Maya and the Three is rated TV-Y7 for fear and fantasy violence, but that doesn’t mean teens and adults of all ages can’t also enjoy this riveting adventure through ancient Mesoamerica.
Each episode is around 30 min long, which means you could binge the entire 9 episode limited series in a day if you wanted to! Maya and the Three is available to stream at 12:01 a.m. PT on Oct. 22.
